Why we suspended nationwide strike – NLC, TUC

In a joint statement released on Wednesday, Emmanuel Ugboaja, General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Nuhu Toro, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), announced the suspension of the nationwide indefinite strike that began on November 14. The decision to suspend the strike was made following a thorough review of offers presented by the Federal Government through National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, which the unions found credible.

Prior to the suspension, organized labor had met with NSA Ribadu and Minister of Labour and Employment Simon Lalong to discuss the government's proposed concessions. Following the meeting, the unions instructed all affiliates and state councils to demobilize and cease further escalation of the strike.

Ugboaja explained that the suspension was intended to facilitate further discussions after the federal government had met crucial demands, including addressing the abduction and brutalization of NLC President Joe Ajaero and others by police and Governor Hope Uzodimma's thugs in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1.

NSA Ribadu tendered an apology on behalf of the government and promised to coordinate the investigation into the incident. Ugboaja noted that some of the perpetrators had been arrested, while others would be apprehended and prosecuted.

Ugboaja commended all affiliates and state councils for their unwavering commitment and tenacity that made the strike a success. He urged them to remain vigilant as they await the fulfillment of the remaining agreements.
